Not west burbs, but Doc Watson's in Romeoville has massive, delicious, and affordable wings. Steamboat BBQ in Wheaton also v good.
Can confirm Bolingbrook was one of the more affordable choices we looked at when looking for houses while still being a pretty safe city, with two solid commercial areas that are easy to get to (Weber & Boughton and Boughton / Janes). Fountaindale Library is quite nice also. And Bolingbrook is directly north of Romeoville. And I-55 is close if you need to drive to other suburbs or the city. No Metra access without driving to Naperville or Lisle but there is a nearby Park & Ride to take the bus downtown. Some good food choices in Romeoville, imo, are At's a Nice Pizza, Fat Ricky's, Thaiway, Bee Brothers, and Doc Watson's BBQ.
In response to the Tasty Waffle, if you go a little further North on Weber, you can get to Niko's Breakfast Club or Bee Brothers, both are better breakfast joints in my opinion. Also along Weber is Doc Watsons, and it has great BBQ. Burrito Mi Tierra is in the same shopping center and has awesome tacos. In downtown Plainfield, Tap House is good, also try Hopscotch and Vine and Sovereign.
