BBQ Alley Chicago

A visit to a Blues club sounds right up your alley. There’s Buddy Guy’s Legends in the loop, and there’s Kingston’s Mines (but honestly it’s too crowded for my liking). You want a true Chicago blues bar? Rosa’s Lounge; it’s off the beaten path for tourists, but it is a true Chicago visit. (Also cool! I’ll be seeing Dave Matthews in Big Sky, Montana, in August).

Leland/Monticello resident here. Beautiful place to live. But it is not without its issues. I will second parking is a frequent issue. Spent more time than I care to admit driving around. As for safety, it’s not bad. A lot of squabbles seem self-contained. Get the AWD, especially if you’re not used to driving in snow. I only got my first AWD vehicle about 2 years ago, even having an oddball FWD SUV here (was coming from FWD sedan and it had all colors and options we wanted other than AWD). Having the additional traction makes a huge difference! Major streets aren’t usually an issue in Chicago as they’ll get salted ahead of snow and plowed first, but dealing with side streets, alleys can be more of an issue without AWD.

In the city of Chicago: I’ve only ever had a FWD car with all season tires in Chicago and I get around fine. The city is very effective at plowing and salting roads in a timely manner. If you’re going to park in a garage that is only accessible by alleyway, you might find benefit from specialized tires or AWD because alleys don’t get plowed. In the Chicagoland suburbs: this is much more variable and dependent on individual municipalities. The state does a good job of keeping highways/expressways reasonably clear. Local roads will vary. No. I'm 21 and have experienced this already. Can't believe my parents never stopped me. There will be drugs, alcohol and a lot of weirdos at the concert. There will be people sexually assaulting/harassing you for no reason at all. (I guess being in a crowd, it's easier to get away with it). You will not be able to contact her. There is barely any signal in there, especially in a huge crowd. I couldn't even find my own friends at the concert. She can either tell the truth and tell you she didn't have signal, or she could manipulate the situation and not answer your calls. Only upside I see to this is she can get dropped off and picked up. Its the money. Food trucks and street food have to have very special licenses. Those are tens of thousands of dollars. And then there are only a few places you can set up for a couple hours. And you have to pay another massive fee to buy a spot. You can't just post up anywhere near the beach and sell food. All in all, just to have a truck, with all the licenses and fees that come with it, it's hundreds of thousands of dollars. And years on a wait list. Just to pay for a two hour time slot at one designated area. Or festival. Most of the street taco vendors used to just take the fines, close up for the day and go home. We just used Joey's movers to move into our apartment from out of town and they were fantastic. Fast and cheap. No special permit or anything. I ended up finding street parking as it was easier than the alley for our apartment. If you get a monthly metra pass you can get an add on CTA pass for half price. Monthly metra passes are only available for part of the month and always start on the first of the month. I like the mobile card. If you have an iPhone you can add it as a transit pass and then you don't have to open your Apple wallet to use it, and it will work when the phone is dead for some amount of time (have not tested!) So great news, my spouse and I got approved for an apartment in Rogers Park! Woo! (Grew up in the NW burbs, lived the last 20ish years in Iowa) We will be moving in February, and just curious about some of the essentials: - How DO you physically move into your apartment in chicago? Do I need to talk to the alderwoman’s office or anything for permits to park the uhaul in the alley to unload? CAN I do that? - CTA passes. Physical vs mobile card? Do I get my first one at a station? And is it reloadable? - Metra (we will probably use both CTA and Metra as our location has easy access to both): Ventra app the best bet? - Staying vigilent: Iowa nice means expecting/giving a small smile/wave to most anyone, and trusting way too much. Welcome to Chicago, soon. I would actually recommend doing many of the tourist stuff to appreciate the beauty of the city as a first-time visitor. The Chicago architectural boat tour for sure. Walk around Millennium Park - Centennial Fountain, The Bean, Maggie Daley Park on the other side of the Frank Gehry bridge. Walk the Chicago Riverwalk. If the weather has clear skies, considering going up to the Skydeck or 360 Chicago to get a great view of the city. Enjoy a meal somewhere along restaurant row and the surrounding streets in West Loop /Fulton Market neighborhoods. Depends on what kind of food you want? Chicago food is pretty vague unless you just mean hotdogs and pizza. For hotdogs I’d definitely recommend Jim’s Originals. All night hot dog stand that always has a huge amount of people out front and you’ll understand why once you try it. Fries are the best too. (Fun fact, in my visit, hardly anyone eats a true Chicago dog. Most people eat it with mustard and grilled onions, and maybe relish. Again that’s from my visit, I’m from the south side) For pizza, if you want deep dish the best I’ve had is Lou Malnatis. Just good all around. Off the top of my head they have $4 22oz any draft on Monday, Tuesday margaritas (and bomb tacos), can't remember the rest but I think everyday 3-5 is happy hour. You can take 18th street more or less to the lakefront. Its as "bike friendly" as anywhere else in Chicago. Youre still on city streets and people drive like idiots regardless. Halsted is probably the quickest route downtown, you can get there in under 20 minutes on a bike. Yes, its reasonably safe. Its been predominantly an immigrant Mexican community for the past few decades, and lately a smaller growing percentage of young white people. Food and drink and retail options reflect this. There is some tension between these two worlds as you might guess. Some of the best Mexican street food in the city is there, and there are also Michelin restaurants like Duseks. There are also lots of galleries on the east end. There is still occasional gang violence and shootings, same as Rogers Park. N

I'm an avid brewery tour enthusiast and have been to most breweries here in Chicago. Here's my rundown of places to check out: 1) Lagunitas Tap Room (Lawndale?) - A monster facility with cool vibes, decent food. Definitely check it out. Only been open for a few months but it’s a great way to see this 1 million BBL operation. 2) Half Acre (Irving Park?) - Smaller place but some nice beers to check out 3) Revolution (Kedzie and Logan Sq) - There are two places, one is really a restaurant and the other is the brewery (no food). Make sure you go to the right one. 4) Atlas (Lincoln Park) - Connected to a bowling alley. Not my favorite beers, but still nice to check out and get a few frames in as well. 5) Goose Island (Lincoln Park and Goose Island) - Two locations, you can get some sp

Here in Chicago we have a rabid wallaby problem. Jump out at you from alleys at night. We have a place that serves the best bbq koala. What else...crocs in the chicago river, tamed dingos are household pets, but no kangaroos.
